Poker Night 2 Review

Poker Night 2 has nearly been out for a week now, which has been enough time to lose a whole load of poker games.

Find out what I think of the second instalment in this review. Be sure to leave your thoughts on the game in the comments section.

Different voice actor for Max in Poker Night 2

Here’s something a bit strange: in Poker Night 2, Max isn’t voiced by William Kasten as he usually is in the Telltale games. Instead, Dave Boat takes over the vocals.

I didn’t notice the change at all, but it makes you wonder why William Kasten didn’t lend his voice. Thanks to Tora Netwon Y for spotting it on the Telltale forums. I’ll update if Telltale comments on the matter.

Also, according to TV Tropes, during the game Claptrap asks Sam what’s next for Telltale. In response, Sam says he’s just glad someone touched up the models of him and Max. I haven’t heard this dialogue myself yet, but it’s certainly interesting if true. Could season four be in production? Or is Sam merely showing his appreciation that Telltale are still looking after him despite the lack of a new game? I’ll hold out hope and go with the former.

Yet another Poker Night 2 trailer

You know when you’re waiting for a trailer and then three turn up at once?

A third trailer for Poker Night 2 has been released. There’s nothing particularly new on show, but Skun’kape makes a cameo at the beginning. Each character is introduced in turn, with Sam pairing up with his little buddy. Max will be lurking around in the background and will insert remarks during the game every now and then.

Poker Night 2 is releasing today on XBLA, with other platforms to follow. You can watch the trailer below.

Poker Night 2 release dates confirmed, also out on iOS

After reporting yesterday that the Steam release date for Poker Night 2 was being pushed back, Telltale have confirmed all platform releases on their Twitter page. They also said that the game will be releasing on iOS and to expect more details soon. Until then, here are the release dates:

XBLA (worldwide) 24th April
Steam (worldwide) 26th April
PSN (America) 30th April
PSN (Europe) 1st May (estimated)

Poker Night 2 release date pushed back, new info and screenshots

Various snippets of new Poker Night 2 information have popped up. Firstly, the Telltale Twitter revealed that you will be able to order drinks for the other players in the game in order to get them drunk and see their tells.

Secondly, two new screenshots have been released showing GLaDOS and Ash talking and the whole table midway through a game. These can be seen embedded below or on the game page.

Thirdly, a list of achievements can be seen over here. Those are for the Xbox 360, but presumably they’ll be the same on every platform.

And finally, the Steam release date for the game is now listed as the 26th of April (instead of the 23rd). No official word on PSN or Xbox.

Poker Night 2 unlock trailer

A new trailer has been put up by Telltale Games to show off the various unlockable items available in Poker Night 2.

As previously reported, players across all platforms will be able to get a Max mask for the Mechromancer in Borderlands 2. Additionally, players on PC/Mac will get Sam’s hat in Team Fortress 2, Xbox 360 will get a Sam costume for their avatar and PS3 will get a Sam/Claptrap and Sam/Portal crossover backgrounds (all amongst others, but these are the Sam & Max related goodies).

Watch the trailer embedded below and you’ll notice that Max is chilling in the background and Sam’s banjo makes an appearance. There are also unlockable decks, themes and felts based on Sam & Max’s 25th anniversary… plus, pause around the 1 minute mark to see Sam rocking a suit, bow-tie and top hat!

Poker Night 2 out 23 April on Steam, available to pre-order

Poker Night 2 is now up for pre-order on Steam. It will be released on the 23rd of April (that’s two weeks time!) and costs £3.99/$4.99.

Pre-ordering will also give you a copy of the first Poker Night game featuring Max. If you already have it then you can gift it to a friend.

LucasArts shuts down

LucasArts, the studio that put out the original Sam & Max game, Hit the Road, back in 1993 has closed its doors today.

Sam & Max haven’t had an association with LucasArts for a long time (Steve Purcell owns the rights), but it’s a shame to see them shut up shop. You’ll probably be aware that Disney acquired LucasFilm last year and they’ve decided to make LucasArts a licensing model to “minimise the company’s risk”.

Best of luck to the staff who lost their jobs.
