Pixar have today announced that Sam & Max will be heading to the big screen in an upcoming live action film. The film, tentatively titled Sam & Max, will not only be the first time that the detective duo have come to life on film, but also Pixar’s first departure from animation.
The film is due to start filming in July 2014 and is scheduled for release in Summer 2016.
James Spader (Pretty in Pink, Stargate) and Danny DeVito (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Batman Returns) will play Sam and Max respectively.
Okay, so while this isn’t strictly Sam & Max news, it can’t help to expand the news reporting a bit…
It has been announced today that Pixar are producing another Toy Story short film called Toy Story That Time Forgot. The special will air on ABC in America.
The Sam & Max link? The short will be directed by none other than Steve Purcell! Having previously co-directed Brave, it’ll be great to see how Steve tackles this.
Here’s the official synopsis:
During a post-Christmas play date, the ‘Toy Story’ gang find themselves in uncharted territory when the coolest set of action figures ever turn out to be dangerously delusional. It’s all up to Trixie, the triceratops, if the gang hopes to return to Bonnie’s room.
All of the original voice cast are set to return, plus a new role from Kevin McKidd (who was Lord MacGuffin in Brave).
A release date is currently unknown, but we’ll report on it when announced.
Dan Connors and Kevin Bruner are two of the founders of Telltale Games. Recently (read: two months ago), the pair held an ‘AMA’ (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit – essentially, they answer user’s questions.
When asked by a user if they’d forgotten about Sam & Max or if there was hope for another season, Bruner replied:
We love Sam & Max and certainly haven’t forgotten about them! I think you’ll see something smaller (more like Poker) than a full Season, and probably not for a bit, but we have NOT forgotten about them, we’ve just been super busy growing like crazy.
Perhaps we could see a one off episode for the duo in the future? Or maybe they’ll turn their hand to another card game…? It’s a shame that a full season is unlikely, but anything is better than nothing!
Poker Night 2 is now available to purchase from the App Store for $4.99. The game is only compatible on devices including and above the iPad 2 and iPhone 4.
Were you waiting for the game to hit iOS devices? Perhaps this will be your second copy of the game? Talk it out in the comments below.
Here’s something a bit strange: in Poker Night 2, Max isn’t voiced by William Kasten as he usually is in the Telltale games. Instead, Dave Boat takes over the vocals.
I didn’t notice the change at all, but it makes you wonder why William Kasten didn’t lend his voice. Thanks to Tora Netwon Y for spotting it on the Telltale forums. I’ll update if Telltale comments on the matter.
Also, according to TV Tropes, during the game Claptrap asks Sam what’s next for Telltale. In response, Sam says he’s just glad someone touched up the models of him and Max. I haven’t heard this dialogue myself yet, but it’s certainly interesting if true. Could season four be in production? Or is Sam merely showing his appreciation that Telltale are still looking after him despite the lack of a new game? I’ll hold out hope and go with the former.
You know when you’re waiting for a trailer and then three turn up at once?
A third trailer for Poker Night 2 has been released. There’s nothing particularly new on show, but Skun’kape makes a cameo at the beginning. Each character is introduced in turn, with Sam pairing up with his little buddy. Max will be lurking around in the background and will insert remarks during the game every now and then.
Poker Night 2 is releasing today on XBLA, with other platforms to follow. You can watch the trailer below.
After reporting yesterday that the Steam release date for Poker Night 2 was being pushed back, Telltale have confirmed all platform releases on their Twitter page. They also said that the game will be releasing on iOS and to expect more details soon. Until then, here are the release dates:
|XBLA (worldwide)||24th April|
|Steam (worldwide)||26th April|
|PSN (America)||30th April|
|PSN (Europe)||1st May (estimated)|
Various snippets of new Poker Night 2 information have popped up. Firstly, the Telltale Twitter revealed that you will be able to order drinks for the other players in the game in order to get them drunk and see their tells.
Secondly, two new screenshots have been released showing GLaDOS and Ash talking and the whole table midway through a game. These can be seen embedded below or on the game page.
Thirdly, a list of achievements can be seen over here. Those are for the Xbox 360, but presumably they’ll be the same on every platform.
And finally, the Steam release date for the game is now listed as the 26th of April (instead of the 23rd). No official word on PSN or Xbox.
